Summer on Stage

Theatre Program for High School Students

Join us for Summer on Stage AND Summer Backstage 2013

We are thrilled to announce our shows for 2013!
This summer we’ve chosen two shows that are unlike anything we’ve done before!

ELEPHANT’S GRAVEYARD
by George Brant
Winner of the 2008 Keene Prize for Literature

and

IN YOUR EYES
Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey
Music by Tom Kitt

Conceived by Brian Yorkey, Tom Kitt, Kathleen Edwards, R.J. Tancioco, Taryn Darr, Vanessa Miller

Elephant’s Graveyard, written by George Brant, is based on the sensationalized true story of Mary the Elephant’s tragic encounter with the townspeople of Erwin, Tennessee. A beautifully written and poignant exploration of American obsession with violence and spectacle, Elephant’s Graveyard will be an inspiration for Summer on Stage participants and audiences alike.

In Your Eyes is a new, never before seen musical from the Tony Award-winning duo Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. Written before Next to Normal exploded on Broadway. In Your Eyes tells the story of high school students attempting to make sense of the chaos that ensues when a plot of gun violence is suspected at their school. They end up learning more about themselves and their peers than they anticipated in this honest and touching new musical.

Regular registration tuition pricing is available now through May 31st. Late registration is available June 1st – 14th. Participation is limited; see below for more information.

What is Summer on Stage?
Summer on Stage is a five-week intensive training program that culminates in two productions, a play and a musical, performed on the main stage at the Temple of Music and Art. Arizona Theatre Company staff and professional teaching artists selected by ATC lead students through a variety of theatre classes that include character development, voice and movement for the actor, dance, script and monologue study, theatrical design, and other areas of theatre that prepare students for a career in the arts. Summer Backstage participants will be mentored by ATC staff and guest artists in additional in-depth and hands-on workshop sessions that will prepare them to assist in the build and load-in of our set, as well as for a spot on the backstage crews for our two productions.

Classes are held at the University of Arizona in the School of Theatre, Film and Television facilities. The first week of Summer on Stage is devoted to community building and audition preparation; we cast our two shows by the end of that first week. The next two weeks of the program are spent in morning technique and training classes, with afternoons devoted to rehearsals for our two shows. Our final two weeks are spent at the Temple of Music and Art in full-day rehearsals onstage and in our rehearsal hall as we incorporate all of our technical elements – set, lighting, costumes, sound, and props – on our way toward two evening performances at the end of the program.
