2018/2019 Season Overview

Native-Gardens-Show-ArtNATIVE GARDENS

By KAREN ZACARÍAS
Directed by JANE JONES
Tucson: 09/08/18 – 09/29/18
Phoenix: 10/04/18 – 10/21/18

A HIILARIOUS NEW COMEDY THAT’S ANYTHING BUT NEIGHBORLY! High-powered lawyer Pablo and his wife Tania, a doctoral candidate, are working toward the American Dream. They move into a well-to-do, mostly white  neighborhood in our nation’s capital. The neighbors are an old-school, well-established D.C. couple with a prize-worthy English garden. A delicate disagreement over a long-standing fence line soon spirals into an all-out ludicrously comic border dispute, exposing both couples’ notions of race, taste, class, and cultural privilege. This brilliant new comedy looks at the fast-receding ideal that we should all be able to live next door to each other, whatever our background, age, and politics – even as the play rightly observes that such harmony cannot exist without some willingness for self-examination, especially on the side of the fence where historical privilege has resided.

At-Wits-End-Show-ArtERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END

By MARGARET ENGEL and ALLISON ENGEL
Directed by CASEY STANGL
Tucson: 10/20/18 – 11/10/18
Phoenix: 11/15/18 – 12/02/18

WE’VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY … A loving tribute to the Ohio wife and mother turned longtime Arizona resident who made herself into a national superstar as a best-selling author and syndicated journalist lauded for opening up the secret world of the mother and housewife. A comic look at one of our country’s most beloved voices – a voice that reassures us that yes, the world is sometimes crazy, but if we look at it and laugh, we have most of it covered. A voice who captured the frustrations of her generation by asking, “If life is a bowl of cherries, what am I doing in the pits?” Chock full of the wit and wisdom of the woman herself, this one-woman tour-de-force allows Erma to tell her own story, leading us through her years lampooning life in the suburbs in her nationally syndicated newspaper column called “At Wit’s End.” From her troubled childhood, where she found comfort in the words of Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley, through her rise to fame as a journalist and public figure, discover the story behind America’s beloved humorist who championed women’s lives with wit that sprang from the most unexpected place of all – the truth.

The-Music-Man-Show-ArtTHE MUSIC MAN

Music and Lyrics by MEREDITH WILLSON
Book by MEREDITH WILLSON and FRANKLIN LACEY
Directed by DAVID IVERS
Tucson: 12/01/18 – 12/30/18
Phoenix: 01/05/19 – 01/27/19

TROUBLE’S COMIN’ … The irresistible musical tribute to the power of make-believe marches onto the ATC stages – and into your heart – with trumpets blaring next season! Meredith Willson’s six-time Tony Award®-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957, regaling them with the story of Harold Hill – the double-shuffle, two-bit, thimble-rigger con artist who rolls into River City station one hot Iowa summer. Hill is intent on swindling the small-town simpletons by turning them against the new pool table at the local billiard hall – a problem that can, of course, only be solved by forming a boys’ band with a wagon full of horns supplied by the swindling salesman himself. Along the way, Hill must seduce the only person in River City smart enough to see through his scam – librarian and music teacher Marian Paroo. By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic, and touching, The Music Man is American musical theatre at its best.

Two-Trains-Running-Show-ArtTWO TRAINS RUNNING

By AUGUST WILSON
Directed by LOU BELLAMY
Tucson: 01/19/19 – 02/09/19
Phoenix: 02/14/19 – 03/03/19

THE CROSSROADS OF A REVOLUTION. There’s a new president in the White House. Racial tensions are on the rise. But no, it’s not 2018. It’s 1969 – and the Civil Rights Movement is sending tremors through Pittsburgh’s Hill District. At the center of the community is Memphis Lee’s diner, slated to be demolished – a casualty of the city’s renovation project, where urban planning is rapidly eating away at Memphis’ beloved neighborhood. Now he must decide if he should allow the government to take over his building or sell the property to a ruthless businessman, while the diner regulars fight to hang on to their solidarity and sense of community. For it is this diner – which seems to always be out of what’s promised on the menu – where they gather daily to gossip about the neighborhood, dream about their futures, and confront the brutal realities of the present. The seventh in his decade-by-decade saga of ordinary African Americans in the turbulent twentieth century, Two Trains Running explores a time of extraordinary change and the ordinary people who get left behind.

American-Mariachi-Show-ArtAMERICAN MARIACHI

By JOSÉ CRUZ GONZÁLEZ
Directed by CHRISTOPHER ACEBO
Tucson: 03/09/19 – 03/30/19
Phoenix: 04/04/19 – 04/21/19

A VIBRANT NEW COMEDY from the mind of former Childsplay (Tempe, AZ) playwright-in-residence José Cruz González. Spending her days caring for her ailing mother, Lucha yearns to break her monotonous routine. Here’s a wild idea: an all-girl mariachi band! But it’s the 1970s, and girls can’t be mariachis … or can they? As Lucha and her spunky cousin hunt for bandmates, dodge disapproving relatives, and bring mom along for the ride, they wonder: Will the band actually come together? As they practice, perform, and break with tradition, their music sparks a tranformation in the lives of those around them – especially Lucha’s parents. American Mariachi is a heartwarming and hilarious new comedy about music’s power to heal and connect, and the freedom to dream big. It features gorgeous live mariachi music that will send your heart soaring and put a bounce in your step. Share this show with the ones you love and let its vibrant music transform your lives too.

Things-I-Know-Show-ArtTHINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE

By ANDREW BOVELL
Directed by MARK CLEMENTS
Tucson: 04/20/19 – 05/11/19
Phoenix: 05/16/19 – 06/02/19

An American Premiere produced by Arizona Theatre Company and the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

Can a parent love their children too much? Is it possible to not love them enough? These are questions that hover over Things I Know To Be True – a beautiful and painfully perceptive portrait of a family and the frictions that arise when grown-up children try to push beyond the confines of their loving parents’ expectations. Behind these apparently ordinary lives lie a million extraordinary details. Working-class parents Bob and Fran have scrimped and saved all their lives to give their four children the things that they never had. Those children are finally grown and ready to fly the nest. It might finally be time to relax and smell the roses. But the changing seasons bring home some shattering truths. Over the course of a year, regrets are exposed, missed opportunities are longed for, and small emotional cracks become chasms. A complex and intense study of the mechanics of a family and the dangers of unarticulated emotions, this gripping new play is both profoundly moving and brutally frank.
